Interpretation
This study is on the reverse of a more finished study for the painting (reference number LHO/D/0681).
Half-length nude study for the male figure, wearing a red hat, to the lower left of the painting 'Captive Andromache' (c.1888, Manchester Art Gallery). The model is clean shaven, whereas in the finished painting he has a thick beard and moustache. The stick he holds is also indicated.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum.
