Inscribed lower right "Perseus" in pencil. Inscribed lower right "22" in pencil. Inscribed upper right, "+1/2" / "64/8/72 / 16/5/80" in pencil. Inscribed on reverse, centre "A42" encircled, in pencil.
Interpretation
This drawing is similar to the finished composition and may be the drawing from which the squared up tracing, held at the Royal Academy of Arts, was made (reference number 04/760).
Study for the composition of the painting 'Perseus on Pegasus' (c.1895-96, Museum and Art Gallery, Leicester). This composition is very similar to the finished painting, although the mountains in the background have not been included.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
