Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed on reverse, centre "E14" encircled, in pencil, written sideways. Inscribed on reverse, centre "119" encircled, in pencil, crossed out in black biro.
Upper half of sheet: full-length study for the two reclining female figures to the right of the painting 'Idyll' (c.1880-81, private collection). The scenery around the figures is also indicated. Lower half of sheet: study for the female figure in the centre of the painting 'Summer Slumber' (c.1894, private collection). A plinth or piece of furniture is indicated below the figure, whereas in the finished work, she lies on a low wall.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
