Interpretation
This sheet includes studies for two paintings 'The Garden of the Hesperides' (c.1892, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight) and 'Flaming June' (c.1895, Museo de Arte Ponce, Puerto Rico). The similarlity between the poses suggests that the pose of the female figure in 'Flaming June' was inspired by the studies for the female figure to the left of 'The Garden of the Hesperides'.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
