Interpretation

There are surprisingly few remaining studies for this painting, completed just before Leighton's death in 1895.

Description

Study for the head of the female figure in the painting 'Lachrymae' (c.1895, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). The hair is roughly sketched in.
