Inscriptions: Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed on reverse, centre right "39 / Rizpah / Study for Whole / design" in pencil. Inscribed on reverse, lower right "E45" changed to "E44" encircled, in pencil, crossed out in black biro.

Description

Study for the composition of the painting 'Rizpah' (c.1893, private collection). The position of the sickle (semicircular blade) has been altered by the artist.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
