Description

Upper left of sheet: nude study for part of the upper body of the figure of Rizpah, and the torso of the male figure behind, in the painting 'Rizpah' (c.1893, private collection). Centre of sheet: full-length nude study for the figure of Rizpah. Her sickle, part of the outline of her drapery, and part of the male figure behind her are also indicated. Lower right of sheet: study for the feet of the male figure.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
