Inscriptions: Inscribed lower centre "X / Study for Rizpah" in blue crayon. Inscribed lower left, two smudges of black ink. Inscribed on reverse, centre "455" encircled, in red biro, crossed out in black biro.

Interpretation

This drawing was reproduced in 'The Magazine of Art' in 1893 as part of a single sheet which included a drapery study. The drapery study is also at Leighton House Museum (reference number LHO/D/0827). It seems that the two studies were cut from the original large sheet.

Study for the head of Rizpah in the painting 'Rizpah' (c.1893, private collection).
