Inscribed lower right "Project / Phoenicians & Britons" in pencil. The word "project" has been crossed out in pencil. Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed on reverse, upper right "E56" encircled, in pencil.
Full-length drapery study for the seated female figure studying cloth, to the lower left of the fresco 'Phoenicians Bartering with Ancient Britons' (1894-95, Royal Exchange, London). The head, feet and hands are also lightly indicated.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
