Interpretation

This drawing was owned by Lord Henry Brougham Loch (Governor of the Isle of Man, Victoria and Cape Colony, 1827-1900) who was the cousin of Leighton's brother in law Colonel Sutherland George Gordon Orr (married 07 March 1857, d.1858). Loch and Leighton remained friends for forty years until Leighton's death, and Leighton supported Loch's projects to encourage the appreciation of art. [See Barrington, Mrs. Russell, 'The Life, Letters and Work of Frederic, Lord Leighton', George Allen, London, 1906, volume I, p.3-4 and volume II, p.334]. Loch presented Leighton House Museum with five studies for the fresco 'Phoenicians Bartering with Ancient Britons' (1894-95, Royal Exchange).

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896 (Fine Art Society reference number E61); purchased from the Fine Art Society by Lord Henry Brougham Loch (Governor of the Isle of Man, Victoria and Cape Colony, 1827-1900); presented to Leighton House Museum by Loch in c.1897
