Inscribed lower right "Phoenicians [?] Britons" upper half of this word has been partially rubbed off. Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed on reverse, centre "P - Bartering with / Britons / D" encircled, in pencil.
Full-length drapery study for the central male figure of a Phoenician in the fresco 'Phoenicians Bartering with Ancient Britons' (1894-95, Royal Exchange). The head and forearms are also indicated. The upper line of the purple fabric which obscures the the drapery to the lower right is indicated, although it is higher in the completed fresco.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
