Description

Upper left of sheet: full-length study for the seated female figure dressed in orange, to the right of the painting 'The Dance' (c.1881-83, Leighton House Museum). Both hands rest in the figure's lap, whereas in the painting the left hand is on the ground and supports the weight of the upper body. Lower left of sheet: full-length study for the same seated female figure. Centre of sheet: full-length study for the standing female figure, with one arm resting on the head, to the right of the painting. Right of sheet: full-length study for a group of two standing female figures, facing to the left. The smaller figure on the left hand side holds a tambourine and leans into the second figure behind her, who embraces her. This may be an early idea for the standing female figure and girl group, seen to the left of the painting, although the pose is very different.
