Description

Full-length study for the male figure of a Briton holding an animal skin to the left of the fresco 'Phoenicians Bartering with Ancient Britons' (1894-95, Royal Exchange). The animal skin is also indicated. Lower right of sheet: study of the hair and part of the animal skin of the same male figure. The face and neck are lightly indicated.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
