Inscriptions: Inscribed lower centre "P" in pencil, lower half of letter cut off, this probably said "Project". Inscribed on reverse, centre "J.14" encircled, in pencil. Inscribed on the reverse, lower right "40" in pencil, changed to "41", crossed out in pencil.

Five full-length studies of female figures in the composition 'The Family of Darius before Alexander'.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
