Interpretation
In the finished painting the figure of Nicola Pisano wears a small cap, rather than the hood shown here.
Left of sheet: full-length study of Nicola Pisano, holding a sculpture, for the mosaic 'Nicola Pisano' (c.1863, Victoria and Albert Museum). Centre of sheet: study for the left hand of Pisano holding a sculpture and for the surrounding drapery. Upper right of sheet: study for the head and hood of Pisano. Lower right of sheet: study for the feet of Pisano.
