Inscribed lower right "Romola" in pencil. Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscibed on reverse of backing board, centre "528" encircled, in blue biro, crossed out in blue biro.
Interpretation
The central study may be related to the pedlar illustrated as part of the vignette to chapter I. The vignette to chapter I, was published in the 'Cornhill Magazine' in 1862, (illustrated on p.8). However the pose and costume is not identical to the completed illustration.
Left of sheet: full-length study for the male figure selling crucifixes, to the left of the illustration 'Monna Brigida's Conversion' (1880-81, 'Dalziel's Bible Gallery').
