Description

Upper left of sheet: full-length study for the group of four figures to the right of the illustration 'Death of the First Born' for 'Dalziel's Bible Gallery' (published 1880-81). Lower left of sheet: full-length study for the female figure just left of centre, in the background of the illustration 'Eliezer and Rebekah' for 'Dalziel's Bible Gallery' (published 1881, 'The Cornhill Magazine'). To the right is a full-length study for the female figure to the extreme left of the illustration. Upper centre of sheet: half-length study for the praying female figure to the left of the illustration 'Death of the First Born'. Centre of sheet: full-length study for the female figure with a baby to the upper left of the illustration 'Death of the First Born'. Lower centre of sheet: half-length study for the female figure at the upper right of the illustration 'Eliezer and Rebekah'. Centre right of sheet: full-length study for the seated male figure to the right of the painting 'Dante in Exile' (c.1864, private collection). Unlike the figure in the painting, this figure does not have a beard or wear a cap. Upper right of sheet: Study for the left hand of the seated male figure to the right of the painting 'Dante in Exile'. Below this is a study for the right hand of the same figure.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
