Interpretation

This sheet of studies is probably related to the painting 'The Dance' (c.1881-83, Leighton House Museum). The group of two figures to the left of the sheet are similar to the figure of a woman and child to the left of the painting. The pose of the arms of the woman, clasped, with one elbow above the head, is very similar to that of a woman to the right of the painting 'The Dance', and the girl leaning back against the woman is also reminiscent of a similar group to the left of the painting.
