Inscriptions: Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed lower right "Head" in pencil. Inscribed on reverse, centre "011" encircled, in pencil, crossed out in black biro. On reverse, lower left, small blob of yellow oil paint.

Description

Study for the head of Phryne in the painting 'Phryne at Eleusis' (c.1880-82, untraced). The pupils of the eyes are not indicated. Lower left of sheet: full-length study for the standing female figure facing the viewer in the painting 'Day-Dreams' (c.1882, untraced).

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
