Interpretation

This study of a female child with a basket, can only just be seen, behind the figure of Andromache, in the painting 'Captive Andromache' (c.1888, Manchester Art Gallery). Our view of her is partially blocked by the figure in dark pink and brown, carrying a pitcher and looking down at the child.

Description

Upper left of sheet: full-length study for the group of figures, just behind Andromache in the painting 'Captive Andromache' (c.1888, City Art Gallery, Manchester). Left of sheet: full-length study for the girl with a basket, just seen behind Andromache in the painting. This study differs from the girl, just seen in the finished work, as the head is in profile, facing to the left. Also, the girl has long hair, tied up and appears to be older than the girl in the painting. Centre left of sheet: Lower left of sheet: study for the left and right hand of the girl holding the basket. Upper centre of sheet: full-length study for the girl holding a basket. Upper right of sheet: studies for the arms and hands, lower legs and feet and the head of the girl. Lower right of sheet: nude study for the girl holding a basket. To the right is a study for the drapery over the left shoulder of the girl.
