Inscriptions: Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed on reverse, lower left "226" in blue biro, crossed out with blue biro. Inscribed on reverse, lower left "63" in pencil. Inscribed on reverse, lower left centre "L78" encircled, in pencil.

Interpretation

These studies may be related to the painting 'Sun-Gleams' (c.1884, untraced), which shows a female figure just standing on a raised platform in the Arab Hall at Leighton's home.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum.
