Interpretation

The study on the right hand side may be an early idea for the figure in the painting 'The Bath of Psyche' (c.1890, Tate).

Description

Left of sheet: half-length study for the female figure in the painting 'Invocation' (c.1889, private collection). In the drawing she is facing to the left, whereas in the finished work she faces to the right. Centre of sheet: head and shoulders study for the female figure in the painting 'Invocation', facing to the left. Right of sheet: three-quarter length study of a standing female figure, turned to the left, with head turned to the right. The left hand holds up some drapery above the head, and the right hand rests on the right hip and holds the same drapery around her. There seems to be a wreath on the head.
