Description

Left of sheet: Drapery study for the figure directly behind Giotto in the painting 'Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna...' (c.1853-55, Royal Collection). Upper centre of sheet: Study for the left hand of the same figure. The sleeve and drapery held in the hand is also indicated. Right of sheet: study for the left sleeve of the male figure with one hand on his hip, to the right of the painting. Centre right of sheet: study for a band of fabric across the chest of the female figure holding a sheet of music to the left of the painting. Lower right of sheet: study for the tunic of the same figure.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896 (Fine Art Society reference number N22); collection of Leighton House Museum; purchased from the Fine Art Society by Mrs. Emilie Isabel (Russell) Barrington (author and painter, 1844-1933) for ú5:5:0; presented to Leighton House Museum by Barrington in c.1897
