Three-quarter length drapery study for the male figure standing on a terrace, turned to the right, and holding a banner, to the right of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). Part of the flag is also indicated. Lower right of sheet: study for the central section of the banner. In the finished work the banner is lifted higher on the right hand side.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
