Interpretation
This is the only known watercolour relating to one of Leighton's illustrations for the 'Dalziel's Bible Gallery', which suggests that Leighton may have considered using the composition for an oil painting.
Study for the composition of the illustration 'Eliezer and Rebekah' for 'Dalziel's Bible Gallery' (published 1880-81). The image is severely faded as a result of light damage, except for a thin border which has been covered by a mount.
