Interpretation

A drawing, which appears to be a study for the head of the female in the painting 'Faith' (c.1894, untraced), was sold through Sotheby's, London, on 14 June 1894. This drawing is signed and dated "1894", which also gives us an approximate date for this drawing and also for the painting.

Study for the arms and torso of the female figure in the painting 'Faith' (c.1894, untraced). 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; purchased from the Fine Art Society by The British Museum, London in 1897 (with 30 others drawings for a total of ú300)
