Inscriptions: Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, embossed. Inscribed on reverse, centre "316" encircled, in blue biro, crossed out in blue biro. Inscribed on reverse, lower centre "N98" encircled, in pencil.

Interpretation

This is probably a study for the head of Cleoboline in the painting 'Cleobolus Instructing his Daughter Cleoboline' (c.1871, untraced).

Description

Head and shoulders study of a female head, facing the viewer and looking down. The head is inclined to the right. The hair is tied up and a ribbon or band is wrapped twice around the head. Part of the figure's dress or blouse is also indicated.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
