Interpretation

The model for this painting has been described by Millar as 'probably Hetty Dene', however the drawing and the finished work bear a strong resemblance to Mary Lloyd, who modelled for Leighton in the 1890s. [see: Millar, Oliver, 'The Victorian Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen', 1992, catalogue number 455, p.165]

Description

Study for the head of the female figure in the painting 'Head of a Girl' (c.1893, Royal Collection). In the finished work the figure is in profile, facing to the left, whereas in this drawing she is turned to the left but part of the right side of the face can also be seen.
