Interpretation
This study was made from the painting 'The Arrival of the English Ambassadors' (1495) from 'The Legend of St. Ursula' series by Vittore Carpaccio (c.1455/65-1525/26). The painting is in the collection of the Galleria dell'Accademia in Venice, and this is probably where Leighton made the study. The detail the chain worn by one of the figures was used as a study for the chain of the figure in red, just left of centre of the painting 'The Reconciliation of the Montagues and Capulets...' c.1853-55, private collection).
Full-length study of the group of four male figures seen to the left of the painting 'The Reception of the English Ambassadors' (1495, Accademia in Venice) by Vittore Carpaccio (c.1455/65-1525/26). The surrounding architecture is also lightly sketched in. Upper right of sheet: two details of the chain around the neck of the figure to the left of the drawing.
