Interpretation
This drawing is a study of the bust of Matteo Palmieri (Italian historian, 1405-1475) by Rossellino Antonio (Florentine sculptor, 1427-1479). In 1854 it was on display in the Uffizi in Florence, but has since been transferred to the Bargello Museum, also in Florence.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896 (Fine Art Society reference number M46); purchased from the Fine Art Society by the Leighton Fund for ú5:5:0; presented to Leighton House Museum in c.1899
