Interpretation

This may be a copy of a watercolour by Seymour Stocker Kirkup (1788-1880), a British artist who was the leader of a literary circle in Florence and a friend of Leighton's friend, Robert Browning (poet, 1812-1889). Leighton met Kirkup in Florence in November 1853 and Leighton's copies of other works by Kirkup are in an album at Leighton House Museum (reference number LHO/D/1139A/p.21 verso)

Description

Copy of the head and shoulders of Dante from the fresco discovered in the Bargello Chapel (c.1336-37, Bargello Chapel, Florence) attributed to Giotto (Italian painter, 1267-1337).
