Interpretation
This is one of many studies of foliage, reproduced with other studies for 'Cymon and Iphigenia', in a publication on the painting, produced by the Fine Art Society. There is similar foliage in the painting, although it is difficult to say for certain these studies were actually made with the painting in mind. [See bibliographical references]
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
