Interpretation
The pigeon or dove to the upper right of the sheet, is similar to the pigeon puffing up its chest to the lower right of the painting 'A Girl Feeding Peacocks' (1863, untraced), however it faces in the opposite direction. There are also several pigeons depicted in the painting 'Summer Slumber' (c.1894, private collection) and doves and roses are both depicted in the painting 'Cupid and Dove' (1870's, untraced).
