Inscribed and dated, upper right corner "Damascus/73 / lemon" in pencil, in the artist's hand. Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed on reverse, upper right "1.025" in blue biro. Inscribed on reverse, centre upper "J" in pencil.
Study of the trunk of a lemon tree which has divided into at least three trunks near the base, and which continues to divide into branches towards the top. A small twig is indicated at the upper centre of the drawing.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896 (Fine Art Society reference number P86); purchased from the Fine Art Society by the Leighton Fund for ú2:2:0; presented to Leighton House Museum in c.1899
