Rough study of part of an interior, dominated by a broad fireplace for the illustration 'An Evening in a French Country House' (published 1867, 'Cornhill Magazine'). To the left of the composition, an object, probably the back of a chair, can be seen. There is a mantle over the fireplace on which ornaments are indicated.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented by Matthews to Mr. Sandercock in c.1896; by descent to his son, T. C. Sandercock; presented to Leighton House Museum by T. C. Sandercock in 1958
