Interpretation
This study was presented to Leighton House Museum by the grandson of Leighton's last valet, Sandercock, in 1958.
Left of sheet: full-length study of a seated dog with back to viewer. The front paws reach to the left and the nose is raised. The dog has short hair. Right of sheet: study of the head and shoulders of a standing mule, facing to the right.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented by Matthews to Mr. Sandercock in c.1896; by descent to his son, T. C. Sandercock; presented to Leighton House Museum by T. C. Sandercock in 1958
