Description

Study for the seated female figure playing a lute, and a male figure for the painting 'Music' (1883-85, Leighton House Museum).

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of J. Heseltine; Sotheby's, London, 'Drawings from Britain and the Continent', 10 July 1995, (lot 168); purchased by Leighton House Museum from Sotheby's, London with the support of the National Art Collections Fund, in 1995
