Interpretation

A second drawing of the same model, made at the same time is at Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery (reference number ). In this version the monk is shown with the back of his head to the viewer.

Description

Study for the head of the male figure, dressed in black, wearing a red cap, immediately behind the Madonna and Child seen in the painting 'Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna...' (c.1853-55, Royal Collection).

Purchased through the Robert Isaacson Gallery, New York, by David Daniels; collection of Stevan Baloga; bequeathed to Leighton House Museum by Baloga in 2003
