Interpretation

This drawing is remarkably similar to another drapery study of the same figure, also in the collection at Leighton House Museum (reference number LHO/D/0752), although this version is rougher and fainter. It is unusual to find two similar drapery studies by Leighton for the same figure.

Full-length, rough nude study of the male figure of a Phoenician with both hands raised, in the centre of the fresco 'Phoenicians Bartering with Ancient Britons' (1894-95, Royal Exchange).
