Interpretation

In 1829 dress reforms were introduced in Turkey by Malmud II. These were not completely successful but the aim was to adopt a western appearance with black trousers, a frockcoat and a fez with only the 'ulema' or professors of law being allowed to wear turbans. Western representatives of Turkish costume after 1829, including those by Dalmivart continue to depict full ceremonial dress creating a more interesting and exotic view of the East.
