Interpretation

The carriage is the 'araba' used by women of the court. The women are shown wearing the traditional 'maharmah' or head and face covering and 'ferdje' or enveloping cloak. The interior of the carriage would have been decorated with silk cushions and a tasselled awning. The outside would have been decorated with gold leaf and blue beads to protect against the evil eye. Leighton includes some coloured decoration on the exterior of the carriage.
