Full-length nude study for the two figures in the painting 'Whispers' (c.1881, untraced). A length of fabric is draped across the hips of the male figure. Lower left of sheet: nude study for the torso and left arm of the male figure in 'Whispers'.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; purchased from the Fine Art Society by Laurence W. Hodson (patron and collector), Compton Hall, Wolverhampton; Cockerell Scott and Fowles, New York; purchased by Robert Sterling Clark (collector, 1877-1956) in 1917; presented by Clark to the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in 1955
