Interpretation

This portrait probably shows a member of Adelaide Sartoris's social group. Leighton spent a lot of his time with Adelaide and her friends around the time this study was made.

Sheet pasted into an album of drawings. Study of the head of a male figure.

Collection of Adelaide Sartoris (ne+ Kemble, opera singer, writer and society hostess, 1814-1879); sold through the Maas Gallery (art dealers) in 1969; purchased by Leighton House Museum in 1969
