Interpretation

The Blind Scholar and his Daughter' was first published to illustrate 'Romola', by George Elliot, in the 'Cornhill Magazine' in July 1862 (facing page 1).

Description

Upper left of sheet: study for the right hand of Romola, half length study for the figure of Romola, and study for the left hand of Romola. Lower centre of sheet: study for the right hand and part of the sleeve of the figure of the blind scholar. Right of sheet: full length study for the figure of the blind scholar. Far centre right of sheet: study for the left hand and part of the sleeve of the blind scholar. All the drawings on this sheet are for the illustration 'The Blind Scholar and his Daughter'.
