Interpretation

The inscriptions on this page include references to John Linnell (1792-1882), Turner and Cheyne Walk, London, where he lived, and Francisco de Zurbarßn (Spanish artist, 1598-1664) The Ormonds note that Leighton had his own system for indicating the quality of the works, when he viewed a private collection. This could explain the marks on the left hand side which appear to be 'v's and '1's.
