Inscriptions: Inscribed "Oriental lady / Koran (Arabic illum / 13th cty) / ADD 25.900 / do 27,261 } Persian / [copy of some Arabic writing]" in silverpoint, in the artist's hand.

Interpretation

The reference numbers "ADD 25.900 / do 27,261" are possibly notes regarding a manuscript in the British Library or the British Museum. The painting 'Study; at a Reading Desk' (1877, Emma Holt Bequest, Sudley House) includes a Koran and, although it is not shown in detail, these notes may be research for that painting.

Purchased by the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, from Geoffrey Steele (antiquarian bookseller, c.1907-2000) from his bookshop at RFD 1, Mahopac, New York, in 1946 for $6.00.
