Interpretation
This could be a drawing of the garden at Ashridge, or even at No.2 (now 12) Holland Park Road (now Leighton House Museum.) The same archway is drawn on the following page of this sketchbook (reference number 1946.35.42 verso).

Page from a sketchbook. View of a garden with an arbour and a pathway leading underneath. An archway can be seen in the background. Vegetation, growing to the left, is roughly sketched in. There is a column to the right of the archway with study of the plan of the column.

Purchased by the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, from Geoffrey Steele (antiquarian bookseller, c.1907-2000) from his bookshop at RFD 1, Mahopac, New York, in 1946 for $6.00.
