Interpretation

Stephen Jones, former curator at Leighton House Museum, first suggested that this drawing may be a study for the painting 'Wedded' (c.1881-82, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney). The figure at the bottom of the sheet is also reminiscent of the painting 'Clytemnestra' (c.1874, Leighton House Museum).

Description

Page from a sketchbook. Thumbnail studies of ideas for compositions, possibly for 'Wedded' (c.1881-82, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney), and 'Clytemnestra' (c.1874, Leighton House Museum).

Provenance

Purchased by the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, from Geoffrey Steele (antiquarian bookseller, c.1907-2000) from his bookshop at RFD 1, Mahopac, New York, in 1946 for $6.00.
