Inscriptions: Inscribed lower right "Garden of the Hesperides" in pencil. Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed on reverse, centre "A68" encircled, in pencil.

Description

Rough full-length rough study for the group of two seated female figures to the left and in the centre of the painting 'Garden of the Hesperides' (c.1892, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight). The serpent and lyre are also lightly indicated. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; sold through Christies (auctioneers) on 23 April 1974 (lot 23); puchased through Christies (auctioneers) by the Walker Art Gallery on 13 July 1978 (lot 167)
