Description

Left of sheet: full-length, nude study for the nude boy just behind the figure of Andromache in the painting 'Captive Andromache' (c.1888, Manchester Art Gallery). An object held in the left hand can just be seen. Centre left of sheet: half-length nude study for the same boy, showing the lower half of the body. Beneath this is a half-length outline sketch of boy, showing the lower half of the body in profile, facing to the right and striding forward with the left leg. Upper centre right of sheet: study for the left arm and hand of the boy, and the handle of the pitcher he holds. To the right is a study for the right shoulder, arm and hand of the boy, with fingers splayed. Below is a study for the right hand with fingers closed, as seen in the painting. Lower centre right of sheet: full-length, nude study of the boy, facing the viewer, turned to the right. The left arm is not drawn. An object held in the right hand can just be seen. To the right is the right leg of the boy in the same pose. Upper right of sheet: two studies for the right hand of the boy in a similar position to the painting, but turned so that more of the palm is visible. Full-length, nude study for the baby at the right of the painting. The pose differs from that of the painting as the baby has back to the viewer and is turned to the left. Lower right of sheet: study of the outline of the head of a baby. Full-length study of a baby with back to the viewer.
